Tap a question to uncover another little ocean mystery.
What actually is a shipwreck? +
A shipwreck is what's left when a vessel is lost or abandoned. Some are underwater, and others can still be seen on beaches and shorelines.
How does sonar find things underwater? +
Sonar uses sound. A sound pulse travels through water, bounces off something and returns as an echo. Scientists use those echoes to learn about what is below.
Why do some wrecks become homes for sea creatures? +
Over time, wrecks can provide hard surfaces and hiding places for marine life. Sea creatures may settle on the structure and fish can shelter nearby.
Why shouldn't we take things from old wrecks? +
Wrecks are part of history and can be protected by law. Moving objects can destroy clues about people and events. Good explorers help preserve what they discover.
Where do our facts come from?
Junior Explorers uses researched ship histories. The illustrations and games are educational interpretations, not photographs of the actual wrecks or guides for diving.
